According to a story reported by the Liberty Institute (www.libertyinstitute.org) yesterday, the Bible of a second grade little girl was confiscated during an independent reading session as “inappropriate reading material.
The girl was told not to bring the Bible back to school again.
Oddly, the school district affirmed that not only is the Bible included on the shelves of the school’s library, but the Bible meets guidelines for books student can read during independent reading periods.
This appears to be a case of a teacher acting alone in violation of school policy. But my heart breaks for that little girl. How embarrassing was it to have her Bible taken away in front of her classmates?
I remember as if it was yesterday being taught to read at a similar age in public school using the Bible – as wonderfully challenging a piece of literature as has ever been created.
But more, I remember Mrs. Gerheardt, our teacher, the kindest teacher I ever had, who prayed for us every day at the beginning of class. There was no pressure from her – just love that transcends decades.
I wonder how this little girl in Texas will remember her teacher.
I just did the math in recalling my own experience, and I got a giant chill. The year I am remembering would have been 1955, the year after prayer was removed from the classroom by the U.S. Supreme Court, exactly 60 years ago.
The issues of unity and the ACE of Hearts are closely connected to our loss of religious liberty, an erosion of our American foundations.
