Of the 1,349 verses in Genesis and Exodus referring to one of the 10 categories of the Cycle, a surprising 67% of them refer to our relationship and unity with God and God’s commandments to his people. But an even more stunning fact emerges with the third-most category of the Cycle – there are 55 references in Genesis alone to God’s willingness for restoration after repeated events of disobedience.
So where are we going with this series? Remember, its title is based on 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NASB):
“If…My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
The context of this incredible verse was God’s astonishingly harsh judgment and punishment of his children after extreme disobedience.
And how do we feel in America today? Are we defiant in the face of extremism and terrorism, loss of influence in the world, and a broken political system teetering on extinction of the Constitution and the freedoms we take for granted?
Or are we starting to realize that we might have failed and this is only the beginning of our punishment?
Our restoration could start with each person sitting down and acknowledging where we have fallen short.
So on the Presidents Day 2015, I offer the following prayer and I challenge you to pass it on as far and wide as you can. Then sit down and take it to your own heart in earnest, heartbroken prayer.
Oh Lord God, I want to be a person called by your name. To have that honor, today I humble myself before you in petition for my struggling country America, knowing that I have contributed knowingly and unknowingly to its current judgment. I want to pray and to seek your face and to turn from any of my ways you see as wicked. And, joy of joys, I know your promise is that you will hear me from heaven, forgive my sin and the sins of my fellow Americans, and you will heal our beautiful land, restoring the unity of our founding fathers. Amen, so let it be!
Will you pray this personally today and every day?
Will you send this across America?
The story of the Cycle is that God wants to restore us if we turn back to him in this simple way.
God bless America!
